Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
Onions and Sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 packet (1 oz) French onion soup mix
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Cheese and Garnish
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and butter until melted. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, releasing their natural sweetness.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced potatoes, caramelized onions, French onion soup mix, sour cream, heavy cream, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir thoroughly until the potatoes and onions are evenly coated with the creamy mixture.
- Assemble and Bake: Transfer this mixture to the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to allow the potatoes to soften.
- Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese evenly over the top, then return the dish to the oven uncovered. Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden, and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Rest and Garnish: Remove from the oven and let the dish rest for 5 minutes to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before serving for a fresh pop of color and flavor.
Notes
- For an extra burst of flavor, add crispy bacon bits to the mixture before baking.
- You can substitute sweet onions for the yellow onion for a milder, sweeter taste.
- This dish can be prepared a day ahead; simply cover and refrigerate, then bake before serving.
