Description

This Ground Turkey Teriyaki Stir Fry is a quick and healthy meal packed with tender turkey, fresh vegetables, and a flavorful homemade teriyaki sauce. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, it combines savory, sweet, and tangy flavors with a citrusy hint from orange zest, all cooked in one skillet for convenience.

Ingredients

Scale

Teriyaki Sauce

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated or minced
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Stir Fry

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 3 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 small onion, small diced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Teriyaki Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine ¾ cup water, soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, honey, and brown sugar. Stir frequently to mix all ingredients well.
  2. Cook and Thicken Sauce: Bring the mixture to a low boil. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining ¼ cup water and cornstarch until the cornstarch is fully dissolved to make a slurry. Slowly pour this slurry into the boiling sauce while stirring continuously. Allow the sauce to thicken, then immediately remove from heat. Stir in the orange zest, and set the sauce aside until ready to use.
  3. Cook Vegetables: Heat sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and sauté for several minutes until softened and fragrant.
  4. Cook Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the skillet with onions. Cook, breaking up the meat, until fully cooked through and no longer pink, about 7-10 minutes. The internal temperature should reach 165°F.
  5. Add Vegetables: Stir in the broccoli florets and shredded carrots. Cook until the vegetables are heated through and tender but still crisp, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  6. Combine with Sauce: Reduce heat to low and pour the prepared teriyaki sauce into the skillet. Stir well to coat all ingredients. Let it simmer together for a few minutes so flavors meld and the sauce thickens further.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve immediately over steamed rice or your choice of side.

Notes

  • Ensure ground turkey is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F for food safety.
  • Fresh ginger can be substituted with ½ teaspoon ground ginger in a pinch.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce if you want to reduce salt content.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas for extra color and nutrition.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
