Enhanced with a hint of vanilla and a sprinkle of sea salt, this easy dessert balances sweet and salty flavors for a perfect snack or dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
Apples
- 2 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, cored and sliced into rings)
Toppings
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (toasted, if preferred)
- 1 tbsp sea salt (optional, for a salty-sweet flavor)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Slice the apples into rings about 1/2-inch thick and remove the core. You can also cut them into wedges if you prefer for easier handling or personal preference.
- Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the milk chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until fully melted. Alternatively, melt the chocolate using a double boiler on the stovetop. Stir in the vanilla extract to enhance the chocolate’s flavor.
- Assemble the Turtle Apple Slices: Lay the apple slices evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle each slice with caramel sauce, then spoon melted chocolate over them. Sprinkle the chopped toasted nuts on top, pressing gently to ensure they stick.
- Add the Finishing Touches: Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over each slice for a delicious salty-sweet contrast. Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate the slices to speed up the hardening process.
- Serve & Enjoy: Once the chocolate has begun to harden, serve immediately for the best texture or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
Notes
- For best results, use firm apples to hold the toppings well.
- To toast nuts, spread them on a baking sheet and toast at 350°F (175°C) for 5-8 minutes until fragrant.
- You can substitute dark or white chocolate chips based on preference.
- If you prefer less sweetness, omit the caramel sauce or reduce chocolate.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container refrigerated to maintain freshness and texture.
