These Cheeseburger Burritos Animal Style combine all the flavors of a classic cheeseburger with the convenience and fun of a burrito. Ground beef is cooked with caramelized onions, then wrapped in warm flour tortillas with cheddar cheese, pickles, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a tangy Animal Style sauce made from mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle relish. Toasted for a melty finish, these burritos are perfect for a quick, satisfying meal packed with savory, tangy, and fresh elements.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 large flour tortillas
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup pickles, sliced
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/4 cup diced tomatoes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Animal Style Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, heat the vegetable oil and add the finely chopped onions. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Using the same skillet, add the ground beef and cook over medium heat until browned and fully cooked through, breaking it apart with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Prepare Animal Style Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, and salt and pepper. Stir until smooth and well blended.
  4. Warm Tortillas: Heat the flour tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave for a short time until they are warm and pliable, making them easier to roll.
  5. Assemble Burritos: On each tortilla, layer cooked ground beef, caramelized onions, one slice of cheddar cheese, sliced pickles, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes if using. Drizzle generously with the Animal Style sauce.
  6. Roll Burritos: Fold the sides of the tortilla inwards and then roll tightly to enclose all the fillings, forming a burrito shape.
  7. Optional Toasting: Place the assembled burritos seam side down on a skillet and toast over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side until the tortillas are golden brown and the cheese inside is melted.
  8. Serve: Serve the cheeseburger burritos warm with extra Animal Style sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • You can omit the diced tomatoes if you prefer a less juicy filling.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder or smoked paprika to the ground beef while cooking.
  • To make the dish gluten-free, substitute the flour tortillas with gluten-free tortillas.
  • Leftover burritos can be wrapped tightly and refrigerated for up to 2 days; reheat in a skillet or microwave before serving.
  • Feel free to customize with additional toppings like jalapeños or sautéed mushrooms.
