Description

Au Jus Mushroom Rice is a savory and comforting side dish that features long-grain white rice baked with a flavorful blend of au jus mix, French onion soup, and mushrooms. This dish is enriched with butter and beef broth, creating a rich, beefy taste that’s perfect alongside steak, roast beef, or grilled chicken. The recipe is easy to prepare and cooked entirely in the oven, making it a convenient yet delicious accompaniment for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 1 packet (1 oz) dry au jus mix
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1 can (4 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the oven and baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Use a 9×9-inch or a similar size baking dish to accommodate all ingredients evenly.
  2. Combine ingredients: In the baking dish, add the uncooked rice, dry au jus mix, condensed French onion soup, drained mushrooms, beef broth, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir everything well to evenly combine the flavors and distribute the ingredients.
  3. Add butter topping: Place the 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, cut into pieces, evenly over the top of the rice mixture. This will melt during baking, adding richness to the dish.
  4. Cover and bake: Tightly cover the dish with aluminum foil to trap moisture and steam the rice. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Rest and serve: Once done baking, remove the dish from the oven and let it sit covered for 5 minutes to allow the steam to finish cooking the rice. Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving to create a light and fluffy texture.

Notes

  • For extra richness, substitute part of the beef broth with additional French onion soup.
  • You can use fresh sautéed mushrooms instead of canned mushrooms for a deeper, fresher flavor.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with steak, roast beef, or grilled chicken to complement its beefy flavors.
  • To make it vegetarian, ensure you use vegetarian au jus mix and vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
